How the Sousse and Monastir day runs
The Sousse and Monastir excursion runs from west to east, in geographical order, which avoids a single wasted kilometre. We start at Port El Kantaoui for a gentle opening, then Sousse in mid morning before the medina fills up, and Monastir in the afternoon. Since no transfer takes more than twenty minutes, any time you spend in one place is easily made up in another.

Port El Kantaoui, the gentle opening
A marina built in the style of an Andalusian village, with its boats, cafés and shops. An hour is enough for a coffee by the water and a walk around the basin. It is the most relaxed stop of the day and the easiest with children.
Pedestrian marina, no traffic
Cafés and terraces facing the boats
An hour is enough, longer if you want to linger

Sousse, its medina and its ninth-century ribat
The Sousse medina is UNESCO listed and still a working medina rather than a showcase. The ribat of 821 is climbed by a narrow staircase up to a watchtower overlooking the whole port. The Great Mosque next door looks more like a fortress than a place of worship, which the coastal raids of the period explain.

Monastir, the ribat and the mausoleum
The ribat of Monastir, set right at the water's edge, has served as a film location and can be climbed to its terraces. Next to it, the Bourguiba mausoleum and its golden domes tell the story of the country's independence. The whole area is compact and flat, which makes for an easy end to the day.

Your pace along the Sahel coast
Because the Sousse and Monastir excursion involves so little driving, it is the one where the programme bends most easily. You can spend two hours in the Sousse medina, cut Port El Kantaoui short, eat late on the Monastir waterfront or head back in mid afternoon. The driver follows you and simply tells you where the day stands.
Fifteen to twenty minute transfers between stops
Order of the visits can be changed on the spot

Return possible from mid afternoon onwards
Sousse and Monastir tour price by departure city
The price of the Sousse and Monastir excursion covers the whole vehicle for the day, as on all our outings. From Sousse you are already on the spot, which makes it the cheapest day per person if you are staying on the coast. Entry to the monuments costs around 8 dinars each and is paid on site.

Three practical details
Two medinas, two religious monuments and a lot of stairs: here is what to plan for.
Narrow stairs at the ribat
The Sousse watchtower is reached by a tight spiral staircase with no continuous handrail. The courtyard remains accessible to everyone.
Quieter souks in the morning
The Sousse medina fills up after 11:00, when the groups arrive. So we pass through late morning rather than at midday.
Modest dress required
The Great Mosque of Sousse and the ribat require covered shoulders and knees. A sarong is enough.
