Two things stand out. The price does not double when the group does: going from 4 to 8 people costs about 40 % more, not 100 %. And the cost per head collapses with group size: at twelve, the Dougga day works out at €16.70 each.

Why price per vehicle rather than per person?
Because that is what reflects the real cost. A day costs the operator fuel, wear, tolls, insurance and a driver's day. None of those change depending on whether two or four of you are on board.
Charging per head is the coach model: the vehicle only leaves if it fills, so the unit price carries a load factor risk. It also explains the shopping stops everyone complains about. When the margin on a seat is thin, it gets made up on shop commission.
A couple comparing "€40 per person by coach" with "€90 for the vehicle privately" often concludes the coach is cheaper. True, €80 against €90, but the gap is €10 for a day with no waiting, no shopping stops and a departure time you choose. At three people, private is clearly cheaper.
