What exactly are excursions in Tunisia?
Excursions in Tunisia, as travellers staying on the coast understand them, mean hiring a vehicle and a driver for a day along a route agreed in advance. The driver collects you at your hotel reception, takes you to two to four sites, waits through every visit, then brings you back in the evening.
The difference with a coach tour comes down to one word: waiting. In a group you wait for the other forty passengers at every stop. In a private vehicle you leave as soon as you are back on board. On a three-stop day that easily adds up to ninety minutes recovered.

Choose on drive time first, not on how beautiful the site looks. A day where you drive five hours to visit for two leaves a bad memory, even when the site is UNESCO-listed. The simple rule: beyond 2 h 15 to reach the first stop, the day becomes demanding.

From Sousse or Monastir, add roughly €10, and El Jem comes closer at 1 h 15. From Tunis, add about €20, except for the Greater Tunis day which is naturally cheaper because it happens on the doorstep.
If you have two days to fill, take one distant trip (Dougga or El Jem) and one close one (Greater Tunis or Cap Bon), with a rest day between them. Two long days back to back are paid for over the rest of the holiday.
How long does a day trip actually last?
Between 6 and 11 hours door to door, with a start around 8 am in the vast majority of cases. The length depends on two things only: the return drive time and the number of stops.
Half day, 5 to 6 h: Friguia Park. You are back in early afternoon.
Standard day, 8 to 9 h: Greater Tunis, Cap Bon, Sahel, Berber villages. Leave at 8 am, back around 5 pm.
Long day, 10 to 11 h: El Jem and Kairouan, Dougga. A 7.30 am start is advisable.
In July and August the heat forces open-air sites into the early morning. A 7.30 am departure in summer is not fussiness: it is what stops you touring Dougga at 38 °C without a single patch of shade.
What does a day cost, all in?
From €45 to €220 per vehicle depending on the destination and how many seats are taken. This is what visitors grasp last, and it changes the whole calculation: for four people, a €90 day works out at €22.50 each.

Private vehicle or coach tour: how to decide?
Go private if there are at least three of you, if you travel with children or someone with reduced mobility, or if shopping stops exasperate you. A coach still makes sense if you travel alone and budget beats everything else.

Which mistakes should you avoid when booking?
Trying to do the Sahara in a day
Douz is more than 450 km from Hammamet, close to five hours of driving each way. Any day-trip desert offer from the north coast sells you eight hours in a car for two hours on the ground. The Sahara needs two days minimum.
Stacking four cities into one day
Forty minutes per site, parking included, is not a visit. Two sites seen properly beat four passed through.
Booking the night before in high season
From June to September, 8 to 12 seat minibuses go days in advance. For a family group, book at least 72 hours ahead.
Not confirming the meeting point
Large hotel complexes have several entrances. Specify the main reception and swap a WhatsApp number the day before. It is the number one cause of delayed departures.

Do you need to speak Arabic to take an excursion?
No. French is very widely spoken in Tunisia, especially in tourism, and English is standard in the trade. Italian and German are available on request, but you need to say so when you book rather than on the morning itself.
Can the route be changed during the day?
In a private vehicle, yes, within reason. Staying thirty minutes longer in Sidi Bou Saïd or skipping a stop is no problem. Adding a town 80 km away is not: it changes the driving time, so the cost and the time you get back.
Do children pay less?
With per-vehicle pricing the question does not arise: the price depends on seats taken, not on age. A couple with two children falls in the 1-4 people bracket. Mention any child seats you need when booking.
What happens if it rains?
Excursions run as planned unless there is a weather alert. Open-air sites become slippery and less enjoyable. Moving the trip to another day of your stay is usually accepted if you say so the evening before.
How many people fit in one vehicle?
Up to 12 passengers in a minibus. Beyond that you need two vehicles. For 9 people or more, book early: the pool of available minibuses is limited in high season.
